THAT'S what was next to the moon! I saw it walking home with the puppies tonight, and was wondering what was so bright.

All you needed to do was refer to it as a star and your friends would have corrected you.

(Or, at least, that's my experience)

Jean DID call it a star, but I could only correct him that it was a planet. Not which!

Venus (and even more so, Mercury) can only be seen near the horizon and near sun-rise or sunset. Venus can never be more than 47° away from the Sun (I think the figure is 26° for Mercury). Sometimes that will be enough to rule it out. At its best Venus is brighter Jupiter.
