As I've mentioned before, I find it conceptually all of a one with nationalism, racism, sexism, aristiocracy, religiousity. Some largish % of people really want / need there to be something you can only be born# with, that can never be taken away - *and that makes you special*. It's insecurity / non-acceptance in the face of an uncertain / unpredictable world. I tend to call it "Essentialist Exceptionalism". I dunno what the real term might be. The ultimate conservativism, I suppose.

# or, perhaps, in the case of religion, born again with!

I suspect you are right although as I've so often said, if I'm not saying, how do they suppose they'll know and that's maybe what really terrifies them.
