Has it ever been enough money that filling a tax return wasn't more pain than it was really worth...

Oh, I think so. Tax returns are only mildly annoying when you do them on the HMRC website – an afternoon of faff if you already have all the source materials filed in a folder together.

It wouldn't be enough money to live on, by a long way. But I'm not sure I don't prefer it this way – a labour of love becomes a chore if you can't temporarily put it down when you're running low on love.
