Chuck Wendig on self-reliance is particularly impressive. I like that he includes my stage of "guide their hand" in teaching, and that his classic example of bad teaching is, yep, "throw them in a pond." Also note "this masculine tough guy image that taught men they must do everything themselves." That reminds me of a small lump in a Donald Westlake where a rural fireman muses that "cause of fire" can often be put down as "farmer." Your farmer does everything himself: he's his own electrician, and he's not a good electrician, and same goes for everything else.
