I vaguely recall, when I first came across "Less Wrong", (via a giant Harry Potter fanfic that the chap in charge had felt moved to write) the first question that came to mind was, "but where do you get the initial number?" and I don't think it was ever adequately answered. Though the fanfic was quite fun.
