I wonder if it is just the contrast, or if some colour might be even better than black. Possibly dependent upon the species of birds in the area, too? Since diurnal birds can (usually) see UV, there might be an option to use that part of the spectrum, if humans find black-and-white blades to be aesthetically displeasing.
