I was interested lately to notice that Vanguard's energy sector mutual fund hasn't really gained money overall for years despite the rise in other sectors; it's now not much higher than it was this time in 2010. Recently its top three holdings were Exxon Mobil, Chevron and ConocoPhillips which I guess gives a clear enough illustration of the fossil fuel industry not having been a great investment.
