Sidebar note: I am still of a mind that Canada should explore going beyond signing and adhering to CETA, to investigating the value of taking on full EU membership.

The current "management" in Washington will argue that NAFTA 2.0 (I will not use the Vulgarian's preferred acronym.) disallows such membership. I say that this can be solved to the satisfaction of Canada, the US and the EU alike.

You are right about the EU needing to figure out their own house somewhat, and what ambitions they want to have for the future. But I'd rather not tie Canada's future too closely to Trump and/or Putin and/or Xi. Really, I would rather not. Ever.
