Date: 2017-12-28 05:56 pm (UTC)The TED talk linked from the article is a bit better, as it clarifies that we knew there were symbols on cave walls as well as drawings of animals, we just hadn't properly curated them. (Although the idea that there's this universal language is somewhat weakened by the admission that the most complicated signs are the least geographically-widespread, and the ones that persist the longest are also the simplest.)
Still, if there was ever a story where the proper conclusion was "more research is needed", it's this one.
