I'm wondering if those are the bases, or the (more nearly) tops, of the village's walls. The way things work in England, I wouldn't be at all surprised if the basal part of some of them were pre-Roman. (We Americans, as you know, are inordinately impressed by Antiquity, and consider a century to be A Very Long Time.)

Those are probably the tops of the walls, there would have been wooden bits on top of that for the roofs, and then turf on top of that to keep the heat in, I'd have thought.
There's another village a bit further away from the road that's definitely pre-roman. I took some photos a couple of years ago when I visited that, but I'm not sure where they are.
