thankfully in Scotland it's not so dire. I did 3 sciences, Maths and English and could have done any combo I could manage to get timetabled (as it was I had to use 2 schools in the local area to get the 3 sciences - we had a co-operative deal going with all the other local highschools)

I suspected it might not be, and had a feeling it wasn't in England these days either but the division seems to persist according to the article.

It might be a local authority thing, or even a school-level policy. Certainly when I did my A-Levels 17 years ago (God I feel old) I was allowed to do Maths, Further Maths, Physics and English Literature.
