Marketing.

He had a promising mainstream career as "Iain Banks". Then he handed in "Consider Phlebas". Orbit editorial/marketing said, "would you mind using a pseudonym?" To which, Iain said, "sure -- sell it as Iain M. Banks".

And that was that.

Er, thanks for the added detail, I do appreciate having the background on the reasons for the pseudonym, but that's not actually the question I asked. I think you may have missed a comma. I said, "Let's eat, Grandma!" NOT "Let's eat Grandma!"
