I was terribly amused by this:

That's part of the point of expensive shoes going back a century or two - it's to show you're so rich that you don't need to walk anywhere because your shoes are so fragile.

And, to be honest, in this case I'd say that the shoes were clearly designed to be used for standing around in nice hotels/function rooms, and not for wandering about on grassy surfaces.
