Yeah. But wait, what's this about Lucas having changed them again? How this time? Argh, why is it so hard to just get the original goddamned movies?!?

You could - back in 2006. But those editions weren't terribly high quality (having been taken from the laserdisc masters), the only high quality version out there is the special edition version with all the tweaks.

As I remember I kept trying to get them then and still only running across the New & Improved versions. *sigh* I'd get the tweaked one rather than have nothing but I keep not quite giving up hope that they'll release decent versions of the originals.
