I lose track

I just had to go and check what year it is.

I blame the end of cheques* - I haven't had to actually write (or type) the year at all in months, so I haven't gone through the whole process of writing "2010" and then having to scribble it out to write "2011" instead.

*I haven't used a cheque in a couple of years. I assume my chequebook is somewhere in my flat, but fuck knows where. Last time we needed to pay builders/plumbers/etc. I just did a direct bank transfer.

Douglas Adams and John Lloyd had a perfect word for this: Screggan.

I am firmly opposed to ending cheques. How are grandparents going to send their grandchildren money now? Including cash will lead to it getting stolen (this has happened to me more than once), and there's no joy in an online transaction.

Cheques are convenient, especially for those of us who don't like online banking. Screw the banks, I want my cheques.

I still write cheques every month or so.

I refuse to do online banking -- I met enough banking IT staff in the late 90s to have a really low opinion of their security awareness and mindset.

I generally write two checks a month; one for my rent, the other to my credit card company. Everything else is done online.

-- Steve is uncomfortable with a lot of direct-debit transations, for no particularly good reason beyond paranoia.

I don't think I have written a cheque for years. Certainly long enough that I can't remember the last time I used my chequebook. The banks have been announcing they will phase out cheques for as long as I can remember, but never seem to have managed to do so. The current target is 2018 according to the UK Payment Council, but this target has been pushed back numerous times, presumably because of the lack of an easy to use alternative. It would be interesting to know what sort of ideas they are considering as alternatives.

I have to hand-write the date upwards of fifty times a day. Sucks.

However, generally I'm doing this on pieces of paper that have both a prior date and a future date on them, so it gets confusing fast as to what the date really is.

I write at least four cheques a year as I object to a 2.5% credit/debit card charge and get really paranoid about setting up internet banking transfers.
