Does the hate partly stem from the fact that the pieces don't drop on their own and have to be nudged down one damn row at a time?

Yup, figured that part out... how is having to press the down key 10 times per piece not making me hate it even more?

There's quite a few of those, and most don't do *anything* to make your life easier. For work a couple of years ago I ended up testing about a hundred Tetrises (don't ask, long story), and 'bastard Tetris' exists in a couple of variants...

Also he just didn't really bother to code it! I'd be a lot happier if it either cleared the key buffer between pieces, or included a 'drop all the way' button - drives me nuts having to press 'down' so many times to get a piece to land, but he says the replay functionality in particular relies on there only being four possible moves. Hmh.

I'm curious if you made the connection that this is by the guy who wrote 'Gay marriage: the database engineering perspective', incidentally.

Funny that he put this up about two days before that xkcd - I do wonder if that was pure coincidence...
