Advice requested - text editor

I'm running Windows and looking for a notepad replacement.  It needs to do the simple stuff really simply, and I don't really have a massive use for complex stuff.  But it should be able to open unix text files without a problem, do find/replace, etc.  If it's scriptable that's a bonus (so I can do a series of finds/replaces in one go) but not essential.

Any suggestions?

GNU Emacs.

With nice menus, and popup dialogs to talk me through things, and no having to remember any shortcut keys unless I really want to.

What you really want is TextMate, but that's not available on Windows. As they say: "TextMate on Windows would be like driving a Ferrari on a road full of huge potholes. What’s the point?"

Textpad (although if has nag messages if you don't buy it), Notepad++ and Notepad 2. The latter are pretty similar and pretty much notepad with knobs on (syntax highlighting and whatnot).

Textpad does clever regexp stuff across entire directory trees (back in 2000 I used it to restyle a 9kpage website in under a week) - it's also got some nice extensions.

Seconded. I wrote most of the versions of Elgg in Crimson, and it performed really well. Although I've moved to Eclipse for coding (and I should say, haven't coded the bulk of anything myself for over a year and a half now) I still use Crimson for day-to-day tasks. Easy to use and not ubergeeky, while being scriptable and powerful.

Scite, which has a stand alone 500K version that runs nicely of a memory stick, has various syntax highlightings, Unix / Mac / Windows CR/LF options, and regex find and replace.

I use Scite. Not a lot these days, but I do use it.
