Delicious!

Various people have asked me how I get links posted on my journal on a daily basis. So here's a how-to guide...

1) Use Delicious.
It's an online bookmarking system. I started using it to keep sites I found interesting in a central repository, and then discovered that there was an RSS feed of it (which is what produces [livejournal.com profile] andyduckerlinks), and then that there was the possibility of reposting from delicious to a blog.

2) Set up Delicious to post to Livejournal.
This is slightly complex. The settings are on the Settings->Blogging->Blog Posting page - but it requires an "out url". If you were running some kinds of blog (Movable Type, Wordpress, etc.) then you'd point it at the posting page there. Livejournal doesn't support this - so you need a page that translates between the two. Sadly, this generally needs to be running in your timezone or livejournal will get upset by you sending a post with a timestamp before an existing post. If you live in the UK then you can use the page I have set up at http://www.notzen.com/lj.php - if you live in a different timezone then download the script you'll find here and change the DateTimeZone to your local one (there are instructions at that link). The out_blog_id and the out_cat_id on delicious' settings should both be set to "1".

3) Leave a comment here saying "I couldn't make it work! Help!" and I'll see what I can do :->

Does using your lj.php require passing our passwords to you?

They're not encrypted when they run in your php script.

I think you ought to make it clear to people that if you wanted to you could log their passwords.

I mean obviously I'd trust you with my pin number, deepest darkest secrets, and so on, but perhaps not everyone would.
