I have no idea if they were doing it to be ironic or not.

There was quite an interesting biographical play Blue Veils and Golden Sands (named after one of her more famous compositions, music for a documentary about the Tuareg people of the Sahara) on Radio 4 a few years ago, starring Sophie Thompson as Delia. It portrayed her as a rather lonely and tragic figure, although I'm not sure if it was entirely accurate in that respect. You're welcome to an mp3 copy if you like.
