I'm a little leary of placing too much reliance on the health benefits of renewables related cleaner air.

I've seen some commentary that makes me think that the causal chain between air pollution and health is less direct that I would be comfortable with if I were committing a trillion dollars of investment.

(Also, the comments on the renewables article are quite funny.)

Aaaaaaaah! I mean, I'm very much on the side of the Joint Chiefs of Staff here, as on other topics (e.g. the trans ban). This is always a strange position for a pacifist like me to be in, although it's not a new one. But it is really worrying that the chain of command is fraying somewhat, to mix metaphors. A military that is not firmly and unequivocally under civilian political control is a very alarming thing, and this is far and away the world's most capable military. Given the nature of the current civilian political control, in the short term I think I'm less terrified by the current arrangements than by the alternative. But all options are bad and scary. It particularly doesn't help, I fear, that nukes are under much more direct Presidential control. Aaaaaaaah!
